Jawbox, an original Discord band, has always amazed me with
their mature song writing and complex sea of chordal structures.
Their latest releaseJawbox furthers my amazement.
What can someone say about this record? Lyrically, the album
is exceptional. Musically, Jawbox stands alone individually
on an island in the mess of music at our ears reach. The two guitar
players/singers, J. Robbins and William Barbot,
create a world of strange and elusive chords. Bassist, Kim
Coletta, holds the whole sandwich together with constancy
And, I am impressed as always by drummer extraordinaire, Zachary
Barocas. His unique and utterly confusing style of rhythm
is what originally attracted me to the band. His beats, however
complex and impossible to replicate, drive the band to unreachable
One of the many wonderful things about this disc is the beautiful
picture their music and vocals paint. Jawbox has a driving sound
which could turn some listeners off, but rather than having shouted
raspy vocals, they have well delivered and well derived vocal
harmonies. And those listeners who were turned off by the drive
are now turned on by the harmonious tones. I love it. Jawbox
sometimes leaves me wanting a bit more however. At times I feel
the band could play with a bit more aggression, but then again
that's just me. If you liked the old stuff, the new stuff will
kill you. And if you haven't heard them yet, then what the hell
are you waiting for.
